Banners of Faith
Four very simple banners began life as humble cloth donated by parishioners, will be transformed into vibrant and colourful celebration banners. These will be decorated by thousands of volunteers as they make their way around schools, clubs, associations, local businesses and churches, until they arrive at the Candlelight Parade, a central feature of the Eastcote Christmas. Sally Prendergast, a parishioner at St Lawrence Church and member of the Eastcote Festival Team, is the inspirational force behind the concept. Sally says “I had an idea earlier in the year to create a celebration of Christian faith in textiles. Having chatted about the idea with Revd Wendy Brooker, she suggested that a Christian banner should feature in the Eastcote Christmas Festival. That simple idea has captured the hearts and minds of many as the four different banners journey around the community. They are special; there’s something about them that makes people smile!” for a full report go to the Eastcote Christmas Festival website.

Eastcote's Cold War Role secrets blunder
notes left in Pub
BBC history reveals how notes left in a London Pub gave the location of GCHQ. Now the site of a new housing estate in Eastcote."The notes contained what would have seemed mysterious references to cypher machines at Eastcote and a man called Sir Edward Travis. Eastcote, in Middlesex, was where Bletchley Park's code-breaking operations were moved to after World War II, and was the first home of GCHQ. Sir Edward Travis was its director". BBC link

Heathfield School for Girls takes part in the world’s biggest multi-venue science lesson

On Tuesday 13th November, Heathfield School for Girls attempted to enter the world record books. A science experiment involving around 2,300 girls at 26 schools across the country – 43 of them from Heathfield School for Girls – measured gravity in a bid to set the record for the world’s biggest practical science lesson in multiple venues.
The experiments measured the value of acceleration due to gravity. One measured the time taken for an object to drop a set distance, and the other measured time with a swinging pendulum.
Pupils taking part in the experiments range in age from ten to 15. “This experiment was such a lot of fun. I could not sleep with excitement at taking part in a world record breaking attempt.” said Anushka Patel, aged 10.
Holly Brewster, aged 10, added “I always read the Guinness Book of Records and I can’t believe that my school will be in the book too!”
All the participating students are pupils of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), the leading group of independent girls’ schools in the UK, as part of this year’s 140th anniversary celebrations. “We’ve been planning this record attempt to mark our anniversary for months,” said Anne Stevens, Headmistress. “The most disturbing statistic from the Institute of Physics’ recent report was that nearly half of all co-ed maintained schools in England do not send even one girl on to do physics at A-level.
“In the girls-only environment of the GDST, science subjects in general, and physics in particular, are hugely popular and successful. At Heathfield School for Girls around 53% of our girls study A-level physics or chemistry, and they do very well at it. The enthusiasm for this experiment, right across our school, shows the degree to which we’re bucking some of the less encouraging educational trends.”
