Heathfield School for Girls is spellbound

Pupils’ linguistic skills to be put to the test in Foreign Languages Spelling Bee semi-final.
On Tuesday 5 February, Heathfield School for Girls hosted a regional semi-final of the Girls’ Day School Trust Foreign Language Spelling Bee.  Heathfield pupils went head-to-head with pupils from eight other GDST schools from across the country, to prove their language skills.  They were tested on the spelling and pronunciation of 90 words in rounds in five different languages - French, German, Spanish, Latin and Mandarin.
The heat is one of four taking place across the country, involving 21 schools and over 370 pupils. The competition is designed to focus students’ attention on the importance of learning foreign languages as well as being a fun way to encourage students in Years 8 and 9 to actively improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills.
The semi-finalists have already have won a round in their school, where they were tested on 40 words.  Since then they have received 50 new words to learn for the upcoming competition.
The winning teams will go through to the final at Howell’s School in Cardiff on 5 March, where they will be tested on 140 words in each language.  The competition is one of a series of activities to mark the GDST’s 140th Anniversary which is being celebrated this year.
Zara Siddiqi, Year 8 pupil, said “This was such a lovely chance to meet pupils from different Trust schools. I was very nervous not only for me but for my friends too.” Sara participated in the Latin semi-finals.
Aarthi Raguraj, Year 8, added “It was a really good experience and it improved my French vocabulary. I would like to do this again.”
Mrs Anne Stevens said: “We are hugely excited to be taking part in the spelling bee.  It has never been more important for pupils to learn a foreign language, so they can compete in the global economy later in life, and we regard it as a vital part of our girls’ education.  People often say the British are lazy at learning languages because most foreigners speak English but we can prove them wrong with this competition!”

Young BMX rider campaigns for a local skatepark

Paul littleton

My name is Paul Littleton I am 17 years of age and have been riding a BMX bike for about 2 years now,and ever since I starting i've always wanted a skate park very local to me so I can go there with friends and enjoy myself. I have been to many other skate parks all over the country and have seen how each one has its own groups and locals, park sizes vary on how many people visit the park as otherwise they become to crowded. I enjoy riding my BMX bike and it is something Ii would like to continue doing way into my 20's and  hope to have a job related to BMX riding as well. I have been an Eastcote resident for over 6 years now and just basically want to help out others in my community and get across peoples ideas and what they want. I came up with the idea of a petition to get people on my side and to strengthen my chances of getting the Skate Park. So far I have over 200 people who have signed the petition and most of them are Eastcote residents who live local to the possible skate park site and the rest live in the Hillingdon Borough. The petition is for giving to the council. I have been speaking to a member of the council, Paul Richards  and  Head of Green Spaces. who is also  interested in my idea.
if you would like to support Paul on his campaign he can be contacted via email at paullittleton2007@hotmail.com Paul also has a Facebook page were you can find out more about his aims and ambitions
