Heathfield School celebrate Chinese New Year
Xin Nian Kuai Lei (Happy New Year) To celebrate the 2011 Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit, the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine at London South Bank University organised a Chinese New Year Celebration Road Show and Heathfield was one of the schools the Institute visited. The troupe performed to pupils from the Senior School and to Juniors from Year 2 to 6. The dancers performed traditional folk dances; martial arts and the traditional exercise in China called Five Animal Exercise. The girls were also allowed to participate and handle some of the ‘props’ including ‘handkerchiefs’ and fans and many girls learnt a kung fu position. The girls also learnt why the Chinese use red and gold in their dances (happiness and wealth) and why they use the tiger to ward off evil. Heathfield pupils have been studying Chinese Mandarin, which is taught to pupils in Year 6 and above, for the past five years. The performance troupe came from the Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine and comprises students and doctors who, next to their studies in Chinese medicine, cultivate their passion for Chinese traditional arts and are fully trained performers. Their mesmerizing show included traditional Chinese lion dancing, martial arts, folk dancing and music. Ms Shani Dovell, Chinese Mandarin teacher said, "I was delighted to see the girls enjoying the Chinese traditional dances. The whole performance was a fantastic culture experience, and girls have learnt so much today. They were spellbound by the beautiful movement, the bright and colourful costumes and the Chinese music – the show was a real treat!" "I really enjoyed the Chinese Dance Troupe that came in because it was very entertaining and exciting to watch. I also enjoyed it when we were called up to try some of their dance moves. I thought it was a fabulous assembly." Imaya, Year 7 |
